St. Theresa's Ugbo Odogwu
The Carmelite Community at Ugbo-Odogwu (Trans-Ekulu) was founded on September 2005, when the bishop of Enugu Diocese entrusted the Parish of St Therese, located there, to us. The community initially had to share accommodation with the friars at Mt Carmel Community at 17 Nike Avenue, GRA, Enugu. Since Easter 2006 the St. Theresa's Community, then made up of two priests and two theology students moved to the newly completed Parish House in Ugbo-Odogwu, which was built with funds donated by well meaning individuals. At present, the community is comprised of Remigius Ikpe (Prior), Moses Aburime and Ibemariae Ugwoke.
The parish is a poor, rural one with a teeming population of about four thousand people, a good number of whom are young people and children. Besides regular parish ministry, the Friars cater for the needs of the youths and children by carrying out some forms of youth apostolate and by running a nursery and primary school for the children.
The parish is located on the margins of the city of Enugu and stands in dire need of infrastructural development. For a Church building we make use of a dilapidated, dwarfish hall. The squalor in the vicinity is unbelievable. The things that make for good health and proper environment for the physical and spiritual well being of the people here are our concern: good water, good sanitation, motorable access road, access to medi-care, etc.
Attached to the Parish is a Primary School which the Vicariate is trying to develop. Thanks to Misean Cara, the roofing and completion of the building isgoing on in the premises at the moment.
The main church building is yet to commence due to lack of availability of funds. Any assistance that we can get to help the immense work that stares us in the face in this great 'Vineyard of the Lord' (which is the literal translation of 'Ugbo Odogwu'), would be highly appreciated.
